What is a Non-Diet Approach?


A Non-Diet Approach in dietetic practice can otherwise be thought of as a non “dieting” approach. It means our dietitians will help you to adopt healthful behaviours that enhance health rather than restrictive diets that aim to reduce weight. 

The reason we adopt a Non-Diet Approach at Trilogy Physiotherapy is because although weight-loss efforts may result in a reduction of weight short-term, volumes of scientific studies have consistently demonstrated that no matter how weight is lost, whether it be low carb, low fat, reduced portion sizes, cutting out “junk” food, most people will regain this weight (if not more) between 2-5 years later. 

It is totally understandable that people may want to lose weight! The society we live in leads us to believe that being a lower weight or a different size will be the answer to our problems. Unfortunately, this is not the case. In fact, scientific research has demonstrated that restriction of food intake to decrease weight can result in binge eating, weight gain, eating disorders, worsened body image and satisfaction (ref), as well as gastrointestinal issues, such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), bloating, constipation, pain and cramping (ref). Studies have also found that weight-cycling (aka “yo-yo dieting”) is a risk factor for the development of cardiovascular diseases (ref).

Our Trilogy Physiotherapy dietitians recognise that enhanced health can be achieved regardless of body shape or size. We adopt evidenced-based dietetic strategies such as Intuitive Eating, Mindful Eating and Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) to help our clients move towards their individual health goals. Clinical studies have demonstrated a non-diet approach to be effective in improving disordered eating behaviours, cholesterol, blood pressure, body satisfaction, decreasing depression, increasing fitness and weight stability long-term (ref). 

We promote joyful movement, quality sleep, eating a wide variety of food (including the fun ones) and provide behaviour change strategies as well as individualised counselling to help unpack any preconditioned beliefs around body size and weight and the foods we eat.
