What is a Non-Diet Approach?

A Non-Diet Approach in dietetic practice can otherwise be thought of as a non “dieting” approach. It means our dietitians will help you to adopt healthful behaviours that enhance health rather than restrictive diets that aim to reduce weight. 

The reason we adopt a Non-Diet Approach at Trilogy Physiotherapy is because although weight-loss efforts may result in a reduction of weight short-term, volumes of scientific studies have consistently demonstrated that no matter how weight is lost, whether it be low carb, low fat, reduced portion sizes, cutting out “junk” food, most people will regain this weight (if not more) between 2-5 years later.

Mindful Eating

Mindful eating helps us discover more about ourselves, our innate internal cues and   external influences that determine our food choices. It means being present with our food and taking notice of any thoughts and feelings that arise and the many characteristics of our food. It also involves being conscious of our hunger and satiety at different points throughout the day. and awareness of how previous experiences or values may dictate our food choices.

Our dietitians can provide guidance on developing mindful eating skills which can help you move toward more natural eating where hunger is honoured, appetite is acknowledged and fullness is respected.

Intuitive Eating

Intuitive Eating is an evidence-based model created by two dietitians, Evelyn Tribole and Elyse Resch (ref). It is a process of honouring an health by acknowledging and responding to body cues, such as hunger and satiety, to meet our bodies psychological and physical needs. 

To date over 100 studies have examined the effectiveness of Intuitive Eating which have found the approach to improve relationship with food, reduce disordered eating behaviours, enhance positive body image (ref) as well as improve important health biomarkers such as lipid profile, blood glucose, blood pressure and inflammatory markers (ref).

Intuitive Eating aligns with the HAES approach to health adopted by our dietitians, putting weight loss dieting aside to instead focus on developing internal awareness, letting go of food rules, finding greater satisfaction in food and exploring joyful movement to enhance overall health.
