Jumper’s Knee / Patellar Tendonitis

Jumper’s Knee aka Patellar Tendonitis is a common sports injury that causes pain and swelling of the tendon that attaches the kneecap to the shinbone.

Symptoms of Jumper’s Knee include:

  • Pain and swelling of the tendon below your kneecap
  • Pain with bending or straightening the knee
  • Pain with running, jumping or walking

Over time the pain can limit your ability to jump and if left untreated for too long, can lead to weakening of the tendon. The weak tendon is then more prone to tears or a full rupture which may require surgery.

Jumper’s Knee is typically caused by repetitive jumping and is common in sports like basketball, volleyball and track and field but can occur with any sport.

The tendon becomes injured when the surrounding structures are not working properly which puts more stress on the tendon itself.

Our physiotherapists here at Trilogy Physiotherapy are very familiar with Jumper’s Knee and have advanced protocols in place to treat the injury effectively and aim to decrease the disruption to training as much as possible. They are also very happy to working with coaches, personal trainers and strength and conditioning coaches to help prevent reoccurrence of Jumper’s Knee once it resolves.
